I was in Boots recently and spotted these pretties!
It’s the Models Own Splash Collection . L-R; Aqua Splash, Golden Shore, Pink Paradise, Mermaids Tears & Red Sea. They are all flakies and Pink Paradise also has the slightest bit of glitter running through it. Don’t they look lovely? They we’re so pretty I had to get them all!
I have one swatch to show you today (the reason will soon become clear as to why I have only swatched one…) which was Aqua Splash:
- SH – Nailgrowth Miracle
- Sally Hansen Salon Manicure ‘Himalayan Blue’ (base colour) 2 coats
- Models Own – Aqua Splash (flakes) 2 ‘coats’
- Seche Vite (2 thick coats)
I so, so wanted to love this as it’s soooo shiny but the formula was a complete nightmare. The flakes are so damn big it made application really difficult as you can’t brush them on, instead you have to dab them about and because the actual polish was quite gelatinous I ended up with really gloopy thick layers with very little flakies 😦 Although it looks turquoise in the bottle, there is only the slightest, and I mean slightest, hint of it when you apply it.This is pretty much the case with all if them except Pink Paradise and Red Sea. I put 2 generous coats of SV over this and it was still uneven to the touch.
On the plus side, the flakies really catch the light in the sun and I can see why they called it the splash collection; it does look like the reflections you see coming off a swimming pool or the ocean.
Now, I’ve never used Mylar flakes (the dry ones you buy in pots and are normally used in acrylic/gel nails) but the flakes in Aqua Splash are quite stiff (one on my ring finger was sticking up at a 90deg angle to my nail!) but they look like they’re pretty much the same thing. It would probably be easier to just buy a pot of Mylar flakes and push them into wet topcoat! If anyone has used Mylar before I’d love to know what it’s like 🙂
As for Himalayan Blue; I’ve found the Salon Manicure range to be a bit hit and miss; some colours are highly pigmented and only need a couple of coats where as others seem to need loads! Fortunately Himalayan was the former – lovely to apply and the wide brush made application easy.
It’s probably my cack-handedness that caused most of the application issues with Aqua Splash but I’ve got another flakie (Nails Inc – the Wyndham) which goes on fine although the flakes are a lot smaller.
So, am I having buyers remorse? A little… But, if any of you want to me to swatch some of the others just let me know in the comments and I’ll happily oblige 🙂 You never know, maybe Aqua Splash is the worst of the bunch lol!
That’s all for today and don’t forget there are only a few days left to enter my 100 Followers giveaway!
